Local Historian Pat Gunn spoke to 5th. Class today about the Great Famine in Cork and Douglas. He spoke eloquently of the dependence the people had on the potato and how destitute they became very quickly when the deadly blight destroyed the crop. He painted a vivid picture of the local Work House now in ruins at the rear of St. Finbarr’s Hospital, local soup kitchens run by Fr. Matthew and the Quakers, the Board of Works Road and Carr’s Hill Famine Graveyard.
Next time you travel up Carr’s Hill, look at the cross and say a prayer for the many poor souls buried there.
